Travel Insurance

If you are planning to travel you should take out with you a travel insurance, because an emergency abroad can be extremely expensive. Make sure that your travel insurance policy covers all that’s mentioned below while you are abroad.

    • Medical and health cover - for an injury or sudden illness.
    • 24 hour emergency service and assistance.
    • Personal liability cover- If you accidentally cause an injury to someone or damage their property they may sue you.
    • Lost and stolen possessions cover – There are limits for items such as cameras and jewellery that can vary. Also, you cannot rely on an airline to compensate you if it loses your luggage.
    • Cancellation and curtailment (cutting short your trip) cover- company will refund the full cost of your holiday if you need to cancel or cut short a trip, ie., pre-paid expenses such as excursions and extra costs incurred to get home.
    • Extra cover for activities that are excluded from standard policies, such as jet skiing.

Your travel insurance policy may also have personal accident cover, legal expenses cover and financial protection, if your airline goes bankrupt before or during your trip.

If you need to extend your cover the company will do it, if not you may shop around for a specialist policy. Also, check the conditions and exclusions of your policy, because most policies do not cover drink or drug-related incidents. Some policies now cover terrorism, so check that your policy does not exclude terrorism. Remember to take reasonable care of your possessions or your policy will not cover you.

Check carefully to see exactly whether you are covered for:
    • accident
    • illness
    • pregnancy (unknown when you buy the policy)
    • jury service or witness summons
    • home emergency: fire, storm or flood, burglary
    • redundancy
    • strikes
    • bad weather – affects the departure of flights and ships.

Travel insurance buying tips:
    • Do not choose cheaper policies with less cover as the initial saving will not be worthwhile.
    • If you make several trips a year, opt for an annual multi-trip insurance to save time and money.

Legal expenses cover
This helps you to pursue compensation or damages following personal injury while you are abroad. This can be very important when you are in a country without legal aid.
